I first saw a Longshore at the Southampton boat show in 1993. She stood out because was a lovely, traditional boat berthed among the modern white cruising yachts.

I spoke to the sales reps (Graham Howitt was one; sorry can’t remember the other) and decided that a Longshore was the boat for me. Unfortunately, the premium quality came at a price that was out of my budget.

I went home to think about it. A few days later, my subscription copy of Practical Boat Owner dropped through the letterbox – and there was a second-hand one, about half the new price, and only about 20 miles down the road! I arranged a viewing, expecting it to be in second-hand condition, but she had hardly been used, and had many extras such as oars and a cockpit tent. It all seemed too good to be true, but
